The Steve Perreault Award

Each year, through its Steve Perreault Award, the National Family Association for Deaf-Blind (NFADB) recognizes a family member or professional who has created a lasting and profound impact on quality of life for individuals with deaf-blindness and their families. It involves a competitive selection process in which prospective candidates are nominated by NFADB members who are family members of individuals who are deaf-blind.

The award is given in recognition of Steve Perreault who brought hope to countless families. Steve was instrumental in strengthening advocacy for families of children with deaf-blindness and helped found NFADB. He worked and volunteered in the field of deaf-blindness nationally and internationally from the 1970s until he passed away in October 2019. Steve championed NFADB’s core belief that “individuals who are deaf-blind are valued members of their communities and should have the same opportunities and choices as others in the community.”

OBJECTIVES:

  1. Recognize the achievements of individuals who make a difference for those who are deaf-blind and their families.
  2. Promote leadership in the deaf-blind community at local, state, and national levels.
  3. Champion the growth of outstanding advocacy to benefit individuals who are deaf-blind and their families.

Recipients are individuals who live and work with passion and harness the best available means to improve services and increase community inclusion for individuals who are deaf-blind. Recipients alternate between family members and professionals from year to year (i.e., one year the award goes to a family member and the next to a professional).

NFADB is very proud to announce Clara Berg (NY) and Gordon Boe (PA) as the recipients of the 2021 Steve Perreault Award. Congratulations!!

This year, The Steve Perreault Award recognized family members who have created a lasting and profound impact on the quality of life for individuals living with deafblindness and their families.

Recipients of the 2021 Steve Perreault Award are the heroes among us

• who live and work with passion and demonstrate outstanding advocacy to benefit families with individuals who are deaf-blind

• who have shown outstanding leadership in the deaf-blind community to make a difference at the local, state and national levels.

This award is given annually in recognition of Steve Perreault who grew up in Massachusetts and began working in the deafblind program at Perkins School for the Blind in 1978. He worked and volunteered in the field of deaf-blindness locally, nationally and internationally for over 40 years.

Steve could make a connection with a child or adult that made you feel like you were the only person with him even in a crowded room. He shared his expertise and years of experience through stories, thoughtful suggestions, and lots of laughter. He was a humble man who cared deeply about others and he brought hope to countless families in the deafblind community. Steve was a talented educator who also championed family advocacy and he helped to found the National Family Association for Deaf-Blind.
